Noche de Rábanos – A Holy Night of… Radishes?

For those diving into The Man with the Pink Sombrero, you’ll already know that Noche de Rábanos features bigly (as a certain president might “eloquently” say). In my book, the event takes on a completely whacked-out religious dimension—including the mention of a Divine Radish Being. Let me just clarify: that part is entirely fictional. Please don’t start a cult. Or do. I’m not here to judge.

But the real Noche de Rábanos? Oh yes, it’s very real—and wildly wonderful.

Every year on December 23 in Oaxaca, Mexico, locals celebrate The Night of the Radishes (Noche de Rábanos)—a truly unique festival where radishes are carved into elaborate, artistic scenes. Think nativity displays, folkloric tableaus, and mythical creatures—all made out of oversized root vegetables. No, really.

A Few Spicy Factoids:

  • The festival dates back to the colonial era, when the Spanish brought radishes to Mexico.

  • Local woodcarving traditions inspired farmers to craft attention-grabbing radish figures to draw in Christmas market shoppers.

  • The first official competition was launched in 1897, and it’s grown every year since—attracting over 100 radish-artists and thousands of eager spectators.

  • The catch? Radishes wilt fast—so the intricate sculptures are on display for just a few hours. Blink, and you’ll miss the holy root.

So... Could Fred Montana Pull It Off?

In The Man with the Pink Sombrero, cartel sicario Fred Montana carves an awe-inspiring sacred radish. And if you’re sitting there doubting him, I say: go fill yer boots.

Because in Mexico and beyond, anything is possible when radishes meet religion. Why not read the book that’s been called “deliciously deranged” and “criminally funny.” The Man with the Pink Sombrero – is available wherever fictional felonies are sold.
